Stadtwerke München Sign Letter of Intent to Join Northern Germany's Largest Decentralised Hydrogen Hub
- Stadtwerke München sign Letter of Intent for stake in Infener's H2 Hub Neumünster
- Public utility and private developer combine expertise for decentralised hydrogen production
Neumünster/Munich, 21 April 2026 – Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Swiss company Infener AG have signed a Letter of Intent for SWM to take a stake in the planned hydrogen hub in Neumünster. The announcement was made at a joint press conference in Neumünster: with the involvement of one of Germany's largest municipal energy providers, this flagship project for decentralised green hydrogen production in Schleswig-Holstein gains a strategically important partner from the public sector.
The partnership extends beyond a purely financial investment: Stadtwerke München will also contribute their extensive municipal expertise in the energy sector. For SWM, the Neumünster hub represents a promising pilot project to position themselves strategically for the anticipated ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.
A key milestone for the H2 Hub is connecting to the high-voltage grid. TenneT and Schleswig-Holstein Netz (SH Netz) are working closely together on this: TenneT is constructing the substation to which the hub will be connected, whilst SH Netz is delivering the grid infrastructure.
Schleswig-Holstein generates more electricity from wind and solar than the grid can absorb. In 2024 alone, approximately 812 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity were curtailed – energy that was produced but could not be used. The cost of these redispatch measures amounted to €78.4 million. Decentralised electrolysers such as the H2 Hub Neumünster offer a solution: they can convert surplus electricity into hydrogen on-site rather than letting it go to waste. This relieves pressure on the TenneT and SH Netz grids – and transforms a cost burden into value creation: green hydrogen for regional industry and transport.
About INFENER
Infener is a pioneer in green hydrogen solutions, positioning itself as an integrated multi-asset energy platform. Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Switzerland with operations in Germany, Portugal and Norway, the company develops hybrid H2 hubs, integrated hydrogen solutions and products that ease grid constraints, decarbonise industrial processes and future-proof municipal energy systems.
At the core is the intelligent orchestration of local energy systems: by combining hydrogen production, battery storage (BESS) and behind-the-meter solutions, Infener creates systems that don't just generate energy, but actively optimise it. The value lies in how these assets work together – Infener is becoming the energy operating system for the decentralised energy transition.
