Bavaria Funds 8 MW Electrolyser to Boost Regional Energy Security

Joint press release by Infener, the City of Münnerstadt, Sauerstoffwerke Friedrich Guttroff GmbH, Stolz Holding GmbH & Co. KG, Nipro PharmaPackaging Germany GmbH, AMS Asphaltmischwerke Main–Saale GmbH + Co. KG and R3 RegionalEnergie GmbH.

Münnerstadt, 28 November 2025:  The H2 Hub Münnerstadt has received funding approval for its 8-MW electrolyser project under the Bavarian Electrolyser Funding Programme. Bavaria’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger, today presented the official funding certificate confirming a grant of EUR 5 million. The plant is designed to produce approximately 800 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

The H2 Hub Münnerstadt leads the project consortium, bringing together a strong alliance of municipal, industrial and mid-sized partners. These include the City of Münnerstadt, Infener AG as project developer and potential operator, Sauerstoffwerke Friedrich Guttroff GmbH, Stolz Holding GmbH & Co. KG, Nipro PharmaPackaging Germany GmbH, AMS Asphaltmischwerke Main–Saale GmbH + Co. KG and R3 RegionalEnergie GmbH. Collectively, they aim to drive the decarbonisation of industrial processes, enhance regional security of supply, and complement Germany’s future hydrogen core network through decentralised production. The funding approval was granted on 1 September 2025.

Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, and Deputy Minister-President, commented: “With the H2 Hub Münnerstadt, we are supporting hydrogen produced in Bavaria for Bavaria – decentralised, close to industry and quickly realisable. The 8-megawatt electrolyser strengthens security of supply and the competitiveness of our mid-sized businesses and represents a key building block in scaling up our hydrogen infrastructure – locally anchored and connected across Europe.”

The facility will operate with a total capacity of 8 MW. In addition to green hydrogen, it will produce oxygen and waste heat, both of which can be utilised locally – in industrial processes and for heat supply. The site is strategically located near major off-takers such as AMS, Guttroff and Nipro, making the hub particularly attractive. It also offers strong potential for the mobility sector: heavy goods vehicles, municipal fleets and regional bus services could in future be supplied with hydrogen at refuelling stations along the B287 and A71.

Michael Kastl, Mayor of the City of Münnerstadt, said: “The BayFeLi funding is a major boost for the H2 Hub Münnerstadt. This project brings together hydrogen production, industrial off-take, energy infrastructure and circular resource flows in a uniquely compact setting – something rarely found in rural regions. We are strengthening local businesses, increasing regional value creation and establishing a reliable pillar for the energy system of the future. Münnerstadt is taking a decisive step towards becoming an important renewable energy hub for the entire region.”

Joel Vogl, CEO & Co-Founder, Infener AG, said: “The H2 Hub Münnerstadt represents a new generation of decentralised, scalable hydrogen production. The funding gives us strong momentum to move quickly into implementation.”

The Münnerstadt site integrates renewable power generation, electrolysis and industrial off-take into a regional hydrogen ecosystem. The project will help reduce CO₂ emissions, ease pressure on electricity grids through local flexibility and strengthen security of supply – a lighthouse project for Bavaria and a scalable model for Germany and Europe.

Tobias Guttroff, Managing Director, Guttroff Group, added: “As an off-taker of green hydrogen, we see the H2 Hub Münnerstadt as a reliable regional partner. The use of by-products improves project economics and strengthens the regional circular economy.”

The H2 hub in Villingen-Schwenningen will make a significant contribution to decarbonising regional logistics and industrial companies and represents a further milestone for Infener in expanding the green hydrogen market, which will sustainably strengthen local value creation. Recently, Infener announced the start of construction for another hub in Neumünster. Infener aims to establish decentralised hubs across Europe as a leading hydrogen producer, thereby decisively contributing to decarbonisation and the implementation of the EU hydrogen strategy, which envisions the installation of electrolysers with a capacity of at least 40 gigawatts by 2030.
